The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET (UG) is a nationwide entrance examination in India for students who wish to study undergraduate medical programs. It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).

• Total Questions: 180 compulsory Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

  • Physics: 45 questions

  • Chemistry: 45 questions

  • Biology (Botany and Zoology): 90 questions

• Total Marks: 720 marks

• Marking Scheme:

  • +4 marks for each correct answer

  • -1 mark for each incorrect answer

  • 0 marks for unattempted questions

• Languages: The exam is conducted in 13 languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Oriya, Malayalam, Kannada, Punjabi, and Urdu. Candidates can choose their preferred language during the application process. Bilingual test booklets (in the chosen language and English) are provided for languages other than English.   

• Syllabus: The syllabus comprises topics from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology (Botany and Zoology) of Classes XI and XII as prescribed by NCERT. You can find the detailed syllabus on the official NTA NEET website.

• Exam Pattern Changes for 2025: As per the latest announcement by NTA, the NEET UG 2025 exam pattern will revert to the pre-COVID format. There will be no optional questions in Section B. All 180 questions will be compulsory. The total time duration remains 3 hours.

• Eligibility Criteria (as of April 4, 2025):

  • Nationality: Indian Nationals, NRIs, OCIs, PIOs, and Foreign Nationals are eligible.

  • Age Limit: Candidates must have completed 17 years of age by December 31, 2025. There is no upper age limit as per the Supreme Court's order.

  • Educational Qualification: Candidates must have passed Class 12 or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology, and English as core subjects from a recognized board. Candidates appearing for their Class 12 exams in 2025 are also eligible to apply.   

  • Minimum Marks in Qualifying Exam:

    • General Category: 50% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology.

    • SC/ST/OBC Category: 40% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology.

    • PwD Category: 45% aggregate marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology/Biotechnology.

  • Number of Attempts: There is no limit on the number of attempts for the NEET UG exam.

• Application Process: The application for NEET UG 2025 was open from February 7 to March 7, 2025. The application is usually online through the official NTA NEET website.

• Admit Card: The admit card is released online a few weeks before the examination.

• Exam Centers: The exam is conducted across various centers in India and abroad.

• Result and Counseling: The NTA declares the results, and an All India Rank (AIR) is allotted to each qualified candidate. Counseling for 15% All India Quota seats, Central Institutions, and Deemed Universities is conducted by the Medical Counseling Committee (MCC). The counseling for the remaining 85% State Quota seats and private colleges is conducted by the respective state medical boards.

Importance of NEET UG Exam

• Single National Level Entrance Exam: NEET UG is the single entrance examination for admission to all undergraduate medical (MBBS), dental (BDS), and other allied medical courses (like BAMS, BHMS, BUMS, BSMS, BVSc & AH, BSc Nursing) in India. It has replaced all other national and state-level medical entrance exams, including AIIMS and JIPMER entrance exams, making the admission process more streamlined and less burdensome for students.

• Merit-Based Admissions: NEET ensures a merit-based selection process for medical and dental education across the country. It provides a common platform for all aspirants to compete, irrespective of their state or board of education.

• Standardized Evaluation: By following a common syllabus and exam pattern, NEET ensures that all candidates are evaluated based on the same standards. This promotes fairness and transparency in the admission process.

• Eligibility for Studying Abroad: NEET qualification is mandatory for Indian students who wish to pursue MBBS or other medical courses in foreign countries and later want to practice in India. The NEET score is a prerequisite for obtaining an Eligibility Certificate from the National Medical Commission (NMC) for foreign medical graduates.

• Access to Top Medical Colleges: A good score in NEET UG opens doors to prestigious government and private medical and dental colleges across India, including AIIMS and JIPMER.
